Is it Safe To Be Outdoors During A Lightning Storm?
You know that lightning has killed a lot of people over the past years. Read different articles and one of the things that you will see is that you need to find shelter the moment that lightning strikes. This is easier said than done especially when you are in an area wherein there is no shelter within a short distance.
There are some myths that you might believe in that will not protect you from lightning. For instance, have you heard the myth that wearing red will make you get struck by lightning more as compared to someone who is wearing a different color? You should rely on a lightning detection system as opposed to the myths people have formulated over the years.
It is not safe to be outdoors during a lightning storm. These are some of the tips that can help you stay safe:
- Be aware of the lightning sirens that may be located in various parts of your area. These sirens can help alert you ahead of time if you need to find shelter before lightning strikes. You do not have to wait for lightning to start striking before you start searching.
- You can look for a safe area or building wherein you know you can be safe while lightning still continues to strike. Staying out in the open will make you more vulnerable to lightning for sure.
- It is best if you would stay as low as possible on the ground. This is the option that you have when you cannot find an enclosed shelter yet. You can also do this while you are trying to get to the shelter. Lightning usually strikes a certain area and the tallest item in the area will get hit. You need to stay as close to the ground as possible to reduce your chances of getting affected by lightning.
- Do not go into bodies of water. You may think that you will be safe underwater but you have to remember that electricity travels through water faster. You will get electrocuted.
Having a lightning detector will help you stay safe at all times. A lot of lightning storms do not last for a long time. Allow it to pass before you continue doing your errands that need to be done outdoors.
